Elverta Road/State Route 99

Elverta Road/State Route 99 Interchange

Location: Sacramento County, California APWA 2014 Transportation Project of the Year

Sacramento, California

Wood Rodgers provided professional engineering and surveying services for the preparation of the Project Report and Final Design for the construction of a new partial-cloverleaf interchange to replace an existing signalized intersection on a four- lane expressway section of State Route 99/70. The design accommodates an ultimate eight-lane freeway section with provisions for HOV lanes in the median. Wood Rodgers designed the overcrossing structure with a total length of 272 feet in two equal spans, and a width of 84 feet to accommodate a four-lane divided section of Elverta Road. The cast-in-place prestressed box girder superstructure accomodates sidewalks on both sides and future utility crossings. Key project issues included relocation of major irrigation/drainage channels on both sides of the highway, traffic handling during construction, relocation of electric transmission and fiber optic telephone lines and mitigation of potential impacts to giant garter snake, a federal threatened species. Construction of the project commenced with a low bid cost of $18 million in April 2012. Wood Rodgers provided design support to the County during construction, which was completed in 2013.
